Garcia and Trees to address council / EDC discussion planned

A straightforward Italy City Council meeting is expected for tonight. The city council’s regular meeting will include a presentation by Albert Garcia and Josh Trees, a request by Javier Gonzalez to abandon a street going through his property, action on water line grant project, action regarding the economic development board, purchase orders, and an ordinance workshop.

IHS Seniors Take Last Walk At Willis Field

The “Volunteer Spotlight” this month is focused on Gary Pickerill of Red Oak, Texas. After 45 years of driving a truck for Central Freight Lines, Gary retired and put his driving skills to good use delivering meals to the elderly, disabled and homebound.

Days in November

Saturday at College Park Mall in Corsicana, the city of Corsicana will be holding their “Days in November” annual arts and crafts show. Along with the craft show, Corsicana Animal Shelter will be there with many animals to be adopted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be about six cats and 10 or more small dogs for adoption.

Italy High School to honor local veterans

On Tuesday November 11, 2008, Italy High School will honor local veterans for their service and sacrifices made for our country and our freedom. All veterans and their families are invited to meet at 10 a.m. in the high school library for a meet and greet. Refreshments will be served at that time. At 10:30, there will be a program in the dome to commemorate Veterans Day. David Henderson, an IHS graduate who died in the line of duty in Viet Nam in 1968 will be honored this year.

Lord’s Acre sale

On Saturday, the First United Methodist Church of Italy hosted a Lord’s Acre sale. There were carnival games and prizes, Sponge Bob bounce house, hot dogs and fresh popcorn, a BBQ dinner and an auction.

IHS Band Hosts Second Annual Spaghetti Dinner

The Italy High School Regiment Band and their Boosters are hosting the band’s Second Annual Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, November 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be door prizes and raffle tickets. This is a major fundraiser for the kid’s camp, equipment and other needs.

National Alzheimer’s Awareness month

November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. It is a time designated for reflection, receiving information and the importance of finding breakthroughs. This national awareness month was appointed 25 years ago and research has come far since then but still has a mountain to climb.

Friday, October 31 was Halloween and Stafford Elementary did it up right for their students. Throughout the day the students were invited to play games, jump in a jump house and get their faces painted.

When you walked into Stafford Elementary, Thursday, October 30 lots of laughter and cheering was heard through out the gymnasium. Stafford Elementary teachers were playing “Knock Out” (a basketball game) for a prize, as all the students cheered on their teachers.

Pumpkin contest at Stafford Elementary

Pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins. But these were not just any ordinary pumpkins — oh no! These were pretty pumpkins, scary pumpkins and all kinds of decorated pumpkins. There were spider pumpkins, witches and pirate pumpkins, just to name a few.

IYAA celebrates Homecoming

The Italy Youth Athletic Association hosts Homecoming every year around the same time as Italy High School’s Homecoming. This year was no different. On Saturday, October 25, after a wonderful day in the parade, the football teams — A, B, and C — played football against the Rice Bulldogs.

Italy Ministerial Alliance food pantry update

The Italy Ministerial Alliance (IMA) food pantry is open every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Italy First United Methodist Church at 124 Harpold. Serving over 40 families this year, the food pantry is gearing up for the holiday season and needs your help.

Cooking for a Cure available again

Cooking for a Cure cookbooks are back for a limited time. They are available at the Plaid Donkey in Waxahachie and the Magic Mirror in Italy. The price is $20 and proceeds will benefit Relay For Life Central Ellis County.

Lady Gladiators host Kopperl in season finale

On Tuesday night, the Lady Gladiators played their last game for the season against Kopperl. They gave a good fight but could not push past the competitors. They lost the match in 3 sets. The score: Kopperl def. Italy 25-20, 25-19 and 26-24. The Lady Eagles add another win to their belt.

Fundraiser for Donovan Lusk

The hearts of the citizens of Italy are compassionate, loving and selfless. This was certainly proven on Saturday night, October 25 at the Donovan Lusk fundraiser. Uptown Italy was bustling with hungry folks enjoying a wonderful dinner at the Up Town Cafe. Then they were seen at Wayne Boze’s community center bidding on terrific items in the Silent Auction in order to raise money for Donovan and his family.

Flying Dollar Ranch’s Halloween Horse Show

Local equestrians suited up in spooktacular costumes for the Flying Dollar Ranch’s Halloween Horse Show and Play Day on October 25 in Italy. Brooke Lewis of Ennis and her horse Ms Cool Fleet won “Best Overall” in the costume contest for their depiction of Princess Fiona and a dragon from the movie Shrek.
