County enacts burn ban

In a regularly scheduled meeting of the Commissioners’ Court on Monday, June 25, 2012, Ellis County Commissioners approved a 90-day ban on outdoor burning.

IHS principal talks about getting serious in the fall semester

It’s 100º plus outside and the streets are scorching. Swimming and playing are things on the minds of IHS students, as well it should be. However, when August rolls around, school should be uppermost on the minds of students. Luckily we have someone looking out for our kids’ future and serious minded about it.

Fireworks Prohibited within Italy City Limits

Summer is upon us and Independence Day family celebrations are a big part of our community history. Food, games and fellowship will soon begin starting this weekend. The police department and the City of Italy would like everyone to have a great time… only without fireworks.

Lone Star Cyclists hosts the 27th Annual Tour d’ Italia

Good weather brought groups of cyclists to Italy on Saturday. The 27th Annual Tour d’Italia was sponsored by the Lone Star Cyclists and over 1050 people registered and rode the countryside around Italy. Membership chairman, Rhea Reedy, estimated 555 people registered on Saturday morning, before the ride.

Italy Police officer fairs well in shooting competition

Italy Police Officer, Eric Tolliver, placed 5th overall in the Marksman Challenge Invitational held in Decatur, Texas  June 9th. The competition was based on and created by a competitor of “Top Shot”, which is a shooting and weaponry competition show on the History Channel.

Grant applications approved

During Monday morning’s regularly-scheduled meeting of the Ellis County Commissioners’ Court, Commissioners gave their permission for two grant applications to be submitted.

Last Six Weeks Honor Assembly for Stafford Elementary

Can you believe it? It is summer already. Where did the time go? Recently, at the Italy High School campus, in the old gymnasium, Stafford Elementary students were being honored for all their hard work, good behavior and good grades. Not only were the students being honored but teachers and staff were also being honored for all the hard work they have put in over the school year.

Police chief addresses fireworks, safety issues for upcoming holiday

The Italy Police Department, in conjunction with representatives from the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, held a town hall meeting in Italy Tuesday night to discuss what can be done to stop illegal fireworks from being discharged within the city limits as well as public safety. 

Narrow banding project moves forward

With a January, 2013 deadline for narrow banding of radio communications equipment under Federal Communications Commission regulations, the Ellis County Commissioners’ Court is continuing to keep the project on track.

May Birthdays at Trinity Mission

Once again it is time to celebrate birthdays at Trinity Mission. This month it is an all girl’s birthday celebration. The birthday girls are: Laverne Lewis, Beverly Carter, Sizie Thompson, Evelyn Pollock, Rosalynn Lee and Billie Baxter.

The IHS Class of 2012 passes the test

Italy High School honored their graduates last Friday night with a graduation ceremony for 36. The top 10% were seated on the front row, as well as National Honor Society members. Cords and collars, gowns and caps were donned as they passed in front of the school board, received their diploma and moved their tassel to the other side.

Town hall meeting to be held in Italy

The Italy Police Department is extending an invitation to all Italy residents to attend a town hall meeting on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 to discuss plans for the community for the week of July 4th. During the meeting, the police department will also discuss their future plans to build trust and relationships between their department and the citizens. The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. at Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, 300 Harris Street in Italy. 

Peri Patterson has a ‘knack’ for teaching

Peri Patterson knew at a very young age that she wanted to teach children. It started back when she was about fourteen years old when she would help her grandmother teach her Sunday School class. She was good at it, had a “knack” for it and loved teaching the little ones. She now has twenty-nine years of teaching under her belt.

Italy Town Hall meeting planned

Gladiators to play in the Inaugural Dale Hansen Classic

Image: The Italy Gladiators will challenge the Malakoff Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 7 at Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie to help kick off the inaugural Dale Hansen Football Classic.

Waxahachie Independent School District, in conjunction with the City of Waxahachie and Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, are proud to announce the inaugural Dale Hansen Football Classic. The Classic will take place September 7-8, 2012 in the new state-of-the-art Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie, Texas. The 9,500 seat facility features excellent viewing capabilities from all locations, a champion style artificial playing surface, and a spacious, three-level, 6,000 square foot press box.

The end of the school year is here but the Italy High School graduating Class of 2012 is embarking on their first steps to the rest of their life. These Gladiators have worked hard the last 12 years and it has paid off-in more ways than one. With over $245,000 awarded in scholarships, these seniors are ready to begin the next part of their journey. The following students have received honors:

With all the reality TV shows highlighting talent, American Idol, The Voice, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars, the public now realizes there are talented performers in every nook and cranny of this great nation. Believe it or not, that fact includes Italy, Texas.

A reminder for everyone to exercise their right and obligation and get out and vote in the Texas state primary on Tuesday, May 29th. Polling location in Italy (Pct. 131) will be the Italy City Council Chambers at 105 West Main Street, Italy. The polls will be open from 7:00am until 7:00pm.

2005 Italy High School graduate completes his Doctorate of Pharmacy degree

Patrick Roberts graduated with his Doctorate of Pharmacy degree this past Sunday in Lubbock at the United Spirit Arena, on the campus of Texas Tech University. Patrick was the valedictorian at Italy High School in 2005. He received his Associate Arts degree in Pre-Pharmacy at Navarro College and was accepted into the Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Pharmacy in 2008.

Summer fun at the Haight’s

Wednesday morning there was all kinds of summer fun being had at the Haight’s. There were water slides, trains, games, a petting zoo and they even had a zip line! We can’t forget about all the goodies they had to eat like pizza, snow cones and brownies.
